Bukit Merese is one of the most popular spots on Lombok Island to explore rolling grass hills, swim at deserted white sand beaches, and marvel at the amazing view overlooking Kuta Lombok.
I have put together this complete guide to Bukit Merese Lombok including how to get there, how much it costs and what to expect when you arrive.
BUKIT MERESE LOMBOK – OVERVIEW
Let’s start this guide with the essentials you should know before visiting, such as Bukit Merese’s location, how to get there, and more.
HOW TO GET TO BUKIT MERESE?
If you have a set of wheels, it takes approximately 15 minutes to reach this from the main tourist town of Kuta Lombok.
You can rent a scooter in Kuta Lombok for as little as 50,000 IDR per day and explore south Lombok at your own pace. Your accommodation should be able to sort you out with some wheels if not, there are many scooter rental stores dotted around Kuta Lombok.
Alternatively, if you like long strolls on the beach, it will take you around 1 hour to walk here from Kuta Lombok.
WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT BUKIT MERESE?
Bukit Merese is mostly known for its sunset, and that’s certainly the best time to visit. However, I personally visited during the day, and I loved the views, and I recommend you do the same.
Keep in mind that the trail to get on top is pretty strenuous and in no way easy, so make sure to bring a bottle of water.
ARRIVING AT BUKIT MERESE KUTA LOMBOK
There is a parking lot at the jump-off point and the parking fee is 5,000 IDR. If you like, you can buy beer, snacks, and water from one of the many mobile vendors in the parking lot.
The walk up to the viewpoint takes around 5-minutes where you will see the idyllic features of rolling grass hills, and several small beaches and coves.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT LOMBOK BUKIT MERESE
When you reach the top of the hill, it’s a matter of picking your own headland to perch up and watch the sunset. The most popular viewpoint is where most of the crowd will be, standing around a dead tree on the edge of the cliff.
We decided to walk a little further to a headland that stretches right out over the ocean and we had a grassy patch on top of Bukit Merese Hill all to ourselves.
The sky put on an incredible show for us displaying soft pinks and blues to the bright oranges and burning reds!

The following day we decided to head back to explore the area again during daylight. Merese Hill Kuta Lombok looked so good during the sunset the night before that we just had to go back for more.
The sun was burning hot and the skies were bright blue on this day and surprisingly not another soul in sight.
Around every corner and over every peak we found stunning beaches and turquoise-colored reefs.
It was so hot that day that we couldn’t resist taking a dip in the ocean. We spent 3 – 4 hours exploring several beaches and cliff tops then decided to continue on to Tanjung Aan Beach for lunch.

OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST
From here, I recommend driving east to a beach called Pantai Tanjung Aan. Surprisingly, there was not a soul in sight during our visit to this stunning paradise.
You can grab a bite to eat at one of the beachside warungs, just a stone’s throw away from the water’s edge. A $2 nasi goreng was an easy decision for lunch with a view.
Right around the corner from Tanjung Aan Beach is a field of coconut palm trees which is a great spot to shoot some photos. We mucked around here on the scooters, having way too much fun and feeling like a kid again!

HOW TO GET TO KUTA LOMBOK?
The most convenient way to reach Kuta Lombok is by plane. Direct flights to Kuta Lombok from Bali, for example, costs around $30.
From Lombok Airport a taxi will cost you no more than 100,000 IDR and it is a 45-minute drive to reach Kuta Lombok.
If you are coming from the north of Lombok after trekking Mount Rinjani, you can organize a driver and a van for the day which costs around 700,00 IDR.
The drive from the north to the south is around 3 hours. However, we stopped in Central Lombok to visit some waterfalls, so the journey took us an entire day but I highly recommend visiting these waterfalls on your way through.
GETTING AROUND KUTA LOMBOK
I spent 3 days in Kuta Lombok exploring along pristine coastline both east and west of the central hub, seeking out the best beaches in Lombok.
It’s as easy as renting a scooter for 50,000 IDR per day and choosing which direction to drive in!
There are plenty of surf breaks to choose from and many surfboard rental shops in town that can sort you out if you are willing to get some waves. Be sure to rent a board from in town as there are no rental stores at the beaches.
