Tukad Cepung Waterfall is one of the most unique and photogenic waterfalls in Bali.
It’s famous for rays of sunlight that shine straight through the top of the falls, creating natural beams across the canyon-like rock formations.
In Bahasa (the Balinese language) Tukad means river and Cepung means flow. Tukad Cepung, therefore, means river flow.
Unlike most waterfalls in Bali, this one doesn’t flow into a river or stream, rather it gently flows down the cliffs and ends in a cave, which makes it such a unique set of falls.
I have put together this complete visitor’s guide of Tukad Cepung Waterfalls including where it’s located, how to get here, the best time to visit, and what to expect when you arrive.
WHERE IS TUKAD CEPUNG WATERFALL?
Tukad Cepung Waterfall is located in the eastern part of Bali in Tembuku and is part of the Bangli regency.
It’s a little over an hour’s drive away from Denpasar and between 1.5 and 2 hours from Kuta, Canggu, and Seminyak.
The closest town is Ubud and from here it should take no more than 45 minutes to get to the falls.

HOW TO GET TO TUKAD CEPUNG WATERFALLS
The best and easiest way to get to Cepung Waterfall is by scooter or car.
If you are staying in the Ubud region, I recommend renting a scooter and making the short drive to Tukad Waterfall.
Don’t feel confident riding a scooter? Another great option for getting around Bali is to hire a private car and a driver for the day and experience all that the island has to offer.

BEST TIME TO VISIT
Due to the stunning setting, its close proximity to the busy Ubud, and its well-maintained trail, Tukad Cepung Waterfall Bali has become increasingly popular amongst tourists.
It is part of many waterfall tours, like the Ubud Waterfall Tour, and because it’s so photogenic, it has also become part of many Instagram tours that are very popular around the island.
The best time to beat the crowds and maybe even get the place to yourself is right at sunrise. Waking up early while you are on vacation can be pretty hard, but this place is well worth it.
THE HIKE DOWN TO THE FALLS
The trail to Tukad Cepung Waterfalls is made up of concrete stairs, providing easy access to the falls.
When you reach the bottom of the valley, you’ll have to wade through a shallow creek crossing, walk through a slot canyon, and scramble around some large boulders before arriving at the falls.
It only takes about 10-15 minutes to walk from the ticket office down to the falls.
It’s easy and therefore a great little hike for families as well. The scenery around the entire place is absolutely stunning.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT TUKAD CEPUNG WATERFALL
The ultimate adventure is what you can expect when visiting Air Terjun Tukad Cepung.
It truly is the most unique waterfall in Bali with rays of magical light that beam through the slot canyon.
MUST READ → BEST BALI WATERFALLS
It is not the deepest of water to go swimming in, but it’s possible to stand underneath the falls for a refreshing natural shower to cool off after the hike down.
Once you’ve enjoyed some time exploring and taking photos of the main falls, follow the canyon downstream where you’ll find another small waterfall.
Featuring hanging vines and a gush of water that bursts out of the canyon walls, it’s another great opportunity for a rinse-off and to capture a few more happy snaps to share on your socials.
THE SUN RAYS AT TUKAD CEPUNG
To see the famous sun rays, you’ll need to time your visit between 9:30 am and 11:30 am.
It will be a lot busier than in the early morning and you will most likely have to wait in line to get your shots, but on a sunny day, nature sure does put on a spectacular show.

TIPS FOR VISITING
When visiting Tukad Cepung Waterfalls, I recommend bringing your swimmers, a towel, drinking water, and of course a fully charged camera.
Do keep in mind that you will have to walk through ankle to knee-deep water when walking up the canyon so wear waterproof shoes or shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. Flip-flops will suffice.

Also, don’t forget to bring cash with you for the entrance fee and if you’d like to buy some food after the hike.
If you do get hungry, stop at one of the restaurants (warungs) that are dotted along the stairway on the way back up.
Grab a bite to eat, have a refreshing drink, and chat with the friendly locals. They will be sure to tell you about the many other waterfalls in the area.
Many will recommend hiring them as their guide but most falls in the area are easy to find and access.
Goa Rang Reng and Tibumana Waterfall are two other falls worth checking out while you are in the area.
