SEE THE MAORI ROCK CARVINGS
The Maori rock carvings are a must-see for anyone visiting Taupo, and it’s by far one of the most famous Taupo attractions.
The main carving stands an impressive 10 meters high and took 4 summers to complete. It is the gift of Matahi and his four assistants, Te Miringa Hohaia, Tuhoto-Ariki, Pita Turei, and Te Kooti Toka to the people of Taupō.
Flanking the main carving are two smaller carvings depicting Ngatoroirangi, the Maori visionary who guided the Tuwharetoa and Te Arawa tribes to Lake Taupo over a thousand years ago.
This artwork is one of New Zealand’s most extraordinary contemporary Maori artworks and is impossible to access on foot due to its location on the lake.
