Puerto Escondido is one of the most popular seaside destinations on the southwest coast of Mexico in Oaxaca state.

‘PE’ (as the locals like to call it) has made its mark on the map for its world-renowned surf beaches, however, there are plenty of other great things to do in Puerto Escondido Oaxaca other than surfing.

From secluded beaches and raging waterfalls to buzzing nightlife and delicious food, there is something here for everyone to enjoy – I guarantee once you arrive you won’t want to leave!

25 BEST THINGS TO DO IN PUERTO ESCONDIDO

In this guide on what to do in Puerto Escondido, I have included all the best places to see and things to do during your visit so you can make the most out of your time here.

And at the bottom of this post, I’ve included general travel information on how to get to Puerto Escondido Mexico, the best time to visit, how to get around, where to stay, and more.

Let’s get right into it!

1. WATCH SUNSET ON ZICATELA BEACH

Zicatela Beach is the most famous beach in Puerto Escondido Oaxaca and the perfect place to start your adventures in this laid-back surf town on Mexico’s southwest coast.

Playa Zicatela boasts a whopping 3km stretch of white sand beach lined with coconut palms, beach bars, hotels, restaurants, and markets. It’s the ultimate all-in-one package!

The best time to visit Zicatela Beach is in the late afternoon when the beach bars come alive, the water temperature is perfect for swimming and witnessing an unforgettable sunset over the horizon.

2. SURF & BEACH BUM AT PLAYA CARRIZALILLO

Playa Carrizalillo is the second-most popular beach in Puerto Escondido featuring a secluded cove filled with lively beach bars, vibrant umbrellas, soft golden sands, medium-sized waves for surfers, and swaying coconut palms along the shoreline.

Sheltered by lush greenery in a secluded cove that is no more than 300 meters in length, this makes Carrazlillo one of the most idyllic beaches in Puerto Escondido

The wide beach and shallow blue waters are the perfect combination for beach bumming and swimming in the ocean to cool off. It’s simply one of the best things to do in Puerto Escondido.

Once you’re done, you can seek shade under one of the many straw-thatched beach huts dotted along Playa Carrizalillo to grab a bite to eat and wash it all down with a cold Cerveza or fresh coconut!

Playa Carrizalillo is not just for the everyday beachgoers, it’s also a very popular spot for surfing, especially for beginners and intermediate surfers!

You can rent surfboards from one of the many surf shacks located down on the beach which cost 150 MXN per hour.

For beginner surfers, you can book surf lessons at Playa Carrizalillo with an experienced surf coach.

3. GO DOLPHIN WATCHING

Puerto Escondido Mexico is a popular destination for dolphin watching, and your best bet to get up close and see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is to join a half-day trip.

PE is home to various dolphin species, the most popular ones including bottlenose and spotted dolphins, which are known for being bigger than other species and for their acrobatic jumps.

On top of that, you might see other fish and animals, like sea turtles, seabirds, and even Mobula rays.

Heck, if you’re lucky enough, you could spot humpback whales which often pass by between November and March.

4. TAKE A STROLL AT PLAYA BACOCHO

Playa Bacocho is hands-down my favorite beach in Puerto Escondido Oaxaca. Featuring an almost endless strip of glistening white sands and blueish-green waters making it the longest beach in the region.

This long stretch of white sand beach is the perfect spot for sunbaking and beach bumming, long walks along the sloping sandbank, and of course, swimming in the ocean to cool off.

The waves and currents at Playa Bacocho can be quite strong at times so just be mindful of this before going for a dip. It’s best to ask the lifeguard on duty when you arrive to advise you where the safest spot is for swimming.

Apart from soaking up some sun on the shoreline, there are a couple of awesome beach clubs down on Playa Bacocho that welcome outside guests.

Villa Sol and Club de Cocos are the most popular beach clubs at Bacocho both of which feature a palm tree fringed beach area, outdoor swimming pools, straw beach umbrellas, a restaurant, and a bar that overlooks the ocean. All they ask is that you spend a minimum of 200 MXN when visiting.

5. HAVE LUNCH & A MARGARITA AT MERCADO ZICATELA

For a delicious, cheap, and authentic Mexican lunch, be sure to check out Mercado Zicatela.

With about 10 restaurants and bars, all serving different food and with stunning views of the ocean, you’re in for a treat, and I’m pretty sure you’ll find a place that’ll satisfy your cravings.

You’ll be greeted with all types of cuisines like Italian and Mexican, and of course, a selection of drinks to choose from to wash it all down.

Mercado Zicatela is open daily from 7 am to 7 pm and is a great stop for lunch and a classic margarita to take a break from exploring all of the best things to do in Puerto Escondido.

6. COOL OFF AT PLAYA CORAL

Playa Coral is one of the most untouched beaches along this stretch of coastline and it’s not to be missed on your list of things to do in Puerto Escondido.

Featuring a secluded bay with calm waters, sugary soft sands, and lush green surroundings. I think it is safe to say that Playa Coral is a slice of paradise!

Playa Coral features a tucked-away little cove surrounded by lush greenery and what seems to be an abandoned hotel.

Fewer waves are breaking in the cove at Playa Coral which makes it an ideal spot to go swimming, snorkeling, and beach bumming on the edge of the shoreline.

Playa Coral is known as the nude beach in PE, so just bear this in mind when taking photos. If you do feel like getting your kit out then this is the perfect spot to do it!

Do note that there are currently no beach bars or restaurants at Playa Coral unlike most other beaches so it’s best to pre-pack lunch and some drinks if you plan to spend a bit of time down on the beach.

7. TURTLE RELEASING ON BACOCHO BEACH

Another one of the top activities to try when searching for what to do in Puerto Escondido is the turtle releasing tour which is a daily activity between 4 pm and 6 pm on Playa Bacocho.

You can pick your own baby turtle hatchling to set free as you watch them scramble down the sandbank and take their first strokes in the ocean.

The cost of the Playa Bacocho turtle release is around $30 USD per person. Click the link below to book online in advance.

8. CATCH A MOVIE AT THE BEACH CINEMA

Just when you thought Playa Bacocho couldn’t get any better. Every Wednesday night, Villa Sol Beach Club plays host to an open-air movie night down on the sands of Playa Bacocho.

The best thing about these beachfront movies on Playa Bacocho is that it’s completely FREE!

The movie typically kicks off at 7 pm so you can do the turtle releasing in the afternoon, watch the sunset from down on the beachfront and then end the night with a movie under the stars at Villa Sol.

It sounds like an incredible afternoon if you ask me and not to be missed on your list of what to do in Puerto Escondido!

9. TRY DEEP SEA FISHING

Mexico is known for its deep-sea fishing opportunities, and PE is definitely no exception. During particular seasons you can catch some incredibly big fish in the area such as blue marlin.

Keep in mind that, while you might fish massive fish, these are for catch and immediate release only, so it won’t become your lunch if that’s what you had in mind!

But other fish like sailfish, grouper, red snapper, and tuna can be caught and kept to grill up – I’m sure you’ll love the experience after the tour.

If you want to book a deep sea fishing tour in Puerto Escondido Mexico, simply visit the tourist offices around town or ask the locals down at Playa Angelito (Angelito Beach).

The price for the tour is around $250 for a group of 6 people on a panga boat or around $550 for a group of 10 to 12 people on a pro-charter.

10. VISIT CASCADA LE REFORMA

Cascada La Reforma (The Reform Waterfall) is one of the best waterfalls in Oaxaca that is best visited on a half-day trip from Puerto Escondido Mexico.

Cascada La Reforma is 38km northeast of PE and it takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes to get here.

There are two ways of getting to Cascada De La Reforma and they are:

1. With a tour company

You can book a tour to visit Cascada La Reforma which can be booked through your accommodation or from one of the tourist offices around town. The tour costs around 800 MXN per person.

2. Rent a scooter and DIY

The cheaper way to visit Cascada La Reforma (the way I did it) is to rent a scooter in PE for 400 MXN per day and make your own way out to these epic falls.

The entrance fee at Cascada La Reforma is only 10 MXN. That’s just 50c, cheap as chips if you ask me!

It’s an easy 10 to 15-minute walk from the entrance down into the valley to reach Cascada La Reforma.

The first set of falls you will come to features a large freshwater swimming hole and a 5-meter waterfall at one end that stretches across a chiseled rock face.

You will then have to cross over the stream here to reach the stairs on the other side and continue along the path to the main falls. The stream is only knee-deep in one section so it’s quite easy and safe to cross.

I was in complete awe when I laid my eyes on Cascada La Reforma. It’s honestly one of the most impressive waterfalls I have ever seen!

It’s possible to go for a dip here to cool off, though make sure to stay behind the yellow rope and don’t go directly beneath the falls. As tempting as this might be, the power of the surging water from the falls is no joke.

11. SUNSET HORSEBACK RIDING – BEST THINGS TO DO IN PUERTO ESCONDIDO

Another one of the best things to do in Puerto Escondido is to experience an incredible sunset on horseback while galloping along the beach.

Sunset horseback riding tours typically last around 4 hours including a ride along the Manialtepec River, across the lagoon, and a stop by the beach for a drink and snack.

Horseback riding in Puerto Escondido Oaxaca is one of the best experiences I had during my visit and I guarantee you’ll love it too!

12. SAMPLE FOOD AT THE PUERTO ESCONDIDO RESTAURANTS

When craving Mexican food, PE has everything you need with a wide variety of delicious food to sample.

One of the highlights is the fresh seafood – the restaurants here pride themselves on using only the freshest fish, caught daily in the nearby waters.

But of course, there’s more to it, and in my guide to the best places to eat in Puerto Escondido, I went through the most delicious tacos in town, pizzas that will transport you back to Italy in a single bite, and mouthwatering Japanese cuisine, to name a few.

13. VISIT PLAYA TIERRA BLANCA

Located just 20 minutes south of PE are the beautiful shores of Playa Tierra Blanca, a place you will immediately fall in love with as soon as you arrive.

What I love about Playa Tierra Blanca is that it’s a hidden gem where you can swim, sunbathe, go for beach walks, or simply take in the sunrise or sunset without crowds of tourists.

Also, while the beach is quite unspoiled, you’ll find a small restaurant with delicious eats and cold beer to enjoy a nice lunch with friends or family.

And if you’re a keen surfer, then come early in the morning and surf some waves, there are many peaks along the coast to choose from.

14. MIRADOR ROMANCE DE VERANO (ZICATELA VIEWPOINT)

Mirador Romance de Verano can be found at the northern end of Zicatela Beach and is easily accessed by a set of concrete steps leading up to the top of the hill.

This epic panoramic viewpoint overlooks the entire bay at Zicatela Beach and you can also get beautiful views of the nearby Playa Principal.

I stumbled across this viewpoint while exploring Zicatela Beach and I was surprised that we were the only tourists there when we arrived.

If you want to get an awesome keep-sake photo of Playa Zicatela, I highly recommend adding Mirador Romance de Verano to your list of places to see in Puerto Escondido Mexico!

15. PLAY BILLIARDS AT BAR ESMERALDA

Bar Esmeralda is mainly known for the super fresh fish, but after your meal, don’t hesitate a second to stay for a drink and play billiards on one of the many tables.

Located a stone’s throw from the ocean on Playa Zicatela, it’s one of the more fun things to do in Puerto Escondido during the day or in the evening.

On top of that, Bar Esmeralda hosts Hot Salsa nights which will surely spice up your night!

16. KICK BACK AT PLAYA PRINCIPAL

Playa Principal is another one of the must-see beaches and is not to be left off your list of places to see in Puerto Escondido Oaxaca.

Boasting glistening white sands and several beach bars and restaurants along the water’s edge, it’s the perfect spot to kick back, grab a fresh coconut, and watch the world go by.

One beach bar and restaurant I personally recommend is La Principal Cantina de Mar. They have a wide variety of dishes and a great selection of drinks, including beer, cocktails, and fresh coconut.

Chill out by the bar, or perch up in one of the Instagrammable hanging nets – I guarantee you won’t regret visiting Playa Principal.

17. DAY TRIP TO HUATULCO

One of the best things about Puerto is its proximity to Huatulco, a gorgeous set of bays and beaches that make up Mexico’s Pacific Coast.

I highly recommend taking a day trip to Huatulco which usually lasts 12 hours and you’ll be able to enjoy everything it has to offer. Ride a catamaran, head to La India and Maguey beaches, go snorkeling, and much more.

Alternatively, if that’s not enough and you want more, consider spending a few nights in this paradisiacal place. There’s plenty to do in Huatulco, whether you want to spend your days relaxing on the beach or exploring the lush jungle surrounding the town.

For adventure seekers, you can enjoy some hiking, zip-lining, bird watching, and more. And no trip to Huatulco would be complete without sampling the local cuisine – fresh seafood is a specialty here.

So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and book your day trip now, these tours sell out super fast!

18. GO SNORKELING AT PLAYA ANGELITO

Playa Angelito is one of the best beaches in PE and definitely not to be missed!

Featuring a small idyllic cove filled with a few fishing boats, a dozen beach bars, and calm waters making it the perfect location for a day of beach bumming, swimming, and snorkeling.

There are not one but two epic beaches that lie in the same crescent-shaped bay at this location. One is, of course, Playa Angelito and the other is Playa Manzanillo.

Playa Puerto Angelito is good for grabbing a bite to eat and drink from one of the beachfront restaurants, exploring the rocky headland on the northern end, swimming in the calm waters in the bay, or joining in on a boat tour along the coastline.

There are several boat operators offering tours up and down the coastline and to other nearby beaches for around 150 MXN per person and also banana boat rides for 80 MXN per person.

Snorkeling and free-diving are also popular activities to do at Puerto Angelito boasting beautiful corals, an abundance of marine life, warm waters, and great visibility underneath the surface.

19. HANG OUT IN LA PUNTA

La Punta is a fun hangout spot boasting a long stretch of sandy beach, crashing waves, and technicolor sunsets, making it the perfect place to unwind and relax after a day of adventures.

The vibe here is laid-back and casual, and I highly recommend coming during the evening after sunset when it gets more crowded at the bars and your chance to make friends from all around the world.

Apart from that, there’s honestly no better place to enjoy a cold beer or fresh seafood at one of the beachside restaurants while watching the sun go down.

20. GET LOST INSIDE MERCADO BENITO JUÁREZ

Mercado Benito Juarez is one of the coolest and most extensive markets in Puerto Escondido with everything you can think of – fruits, meats, clothes, delicious Mexican food, and the list goes on!

There is so much to discover at Mercado Benito Juarez market that you could spend hours wandering around inside.

Apart from all the local shops, you’ll find a few Mexican eateries inside the market selling tacos, tamales, baked goods, fresh juices, and much more.

All the vendors are friendly, the service is excellent despite being a market, and prices are very cheap, which is great for those traveling on a budget.

21. SURF THE POINT BREAK AT LA PUNTA

La Punta Zicatela is sometimes referred to as the Mexican Pipeline boasting large barrelling waves that wrap into the bay on a left-hand point break.

On a decent-sized swell, Zicatela can see up to 10ft waves breaking into the bay and definitely recommended for experienced surfers only.

On a small swell, La Punta is perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers when the waves are more mellow.

If you don’t have your own surfboard, it’s possible to rent one from the surf shacks located down on the beach for around 150 MXN per hour and if you’re a beginner surfer, you can book surf lessons here.

22. ENJOY THE NIGHTLIFE IN PUERTO ESCONDIDO MEXICO

After a long day exploring around town, the coolest thing to do in Puerto Escondido is to enjoy the lively nightlife scene.

The Mexican coastal town is well-known for its vibrant atmosphere and a wide variety of bars and clubs.

Regardless if you’re in the mood to dance the whole night or just relax with a cocktail in hand, you’ll find lots of options to choose from. Of course, you will also enjoy live music, delicious food, and stunning ocean views.

Best of all, Puerto Escondido’s nightlife is friendly and welcoming, so you’re sure to have a great time no matter where you go.

23. DAY TRIP TO MAZUNTE

Located about 1 hour south of Puerto Escondido, Mazunte is a beautiful and laid-back community on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. It’s widely known for its stunning beaches, lush jungle, and vibrant setting.

On a day trip to Mazunte, you’ll get to enjoy activities such as swimming, working on your tan at the beach, and stopping at other locations such as Zipolite, Ventanilla, and Punta Cometa.

And if that’s not enough, chill at one of the bars chosen by the tour guide and taste the absolute best Mezcal and Tequila this part of Mexico has to offer.

Overall, whether you’re looking for a relaxing day by the sea or an adventure in the jungle, Mazunte is sure to have something for everyone.

24. VISIT MANIALTEPEC LAGOON

Laguna Manialtepec is an impressive 6 km lagoon just 30 minutes north of PE.

Most famous for its many different species of birds, local wildlife, and the bio-luminescent plankton that can be seen only at nighttime.

You can visit Laguna Manialtepec DIY though my recommendation is to book a tour of the lagoon which includes boating, kayaking, and a nighttime swim with the bio-luminescent plankton.

The best way to activate the strange phosphorescent glow is to run your hand through the water and the plankton will start to sparkle like stars in the night sky.

25. ATV’S & RAFTING IN SIERRA MADRE MOUNTAINS

The Sierra Madre Mountains are a playground for outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. But for those looking for a truly unique adventure, ATV and rafting tours offer the perfect opportunity to explore the regions outside of Puerto.

ATV tours take riders on an exhilarating ride through the mountains, past waterfalls, and through forests. The tour also includes a fun rafting stop, floating downstream on agitated currents and taking in the stunning views.

And to top it off, the whole experience lasts about 9 hours, during which you’ll enjoy the stunning Sierra Madre mountains.

QUICK ANSWERS: PUERTO ESCONDIDO OAXACA

Below you’ll find some quick answers to the most frequently asked questions and things to know before you visit this beautiful town on the Pacific Coast of Oaxaca.

BEST TIME TO VISIT PUERTO ESCONDIDO

Puerto Escondido has only two seasons, the wet season and the dry season.

The wet season is typically between June and October and the dry season is between November and May.

PE can be visited year-round as the average temperature during the day is 27°C and it rarely goes below 20°C at night.

The high season is during the winter months (the dry season) between November and May which sees a large number of tourists and prices are usually inflated during this time.

My recommendation is to visit Puerto Escondido during the summer months (the wet season) between June and October when there are fewer tourists, prices for food and accommodation are lower and it’s sunny every day with the occasional downpour in the evening.
