HOW TO GET TO OSHIMA ISLAND?
There are two ways to get to Izu Oshima Island from Tokyo, one is with the high-speed ferry and the other is by plane. Both options are pretty straightforward and convenient.
TOKYO TO OSHIMA ISLAND BY HIGH-SPEED FERRY
The Tokaikisen high-speed ferry has daily departures from Takeshiba Ship Terminal in Tokyo, located near Takeshiba Station and Hamamatsuchō Station.
From Takeshiba Ship Terminal in Tokyo to Oshima, the journey takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. The ferry will arrive at Motomachi Port or Okata Port depending on the sea conditions.

TOKYO TO OSHIMA ISLAND BY PLANE
If you prefer to fly, there are flights from Tokyo’s Chofu Airport to the island, and the flight takes just 30 minutes.
You can search and book flights from Tokyo to Oshima Island on the New Central Airservice website.
Both options are convenient, but the high-speed ferry ride offers scenic views and a comfortable experience.
HOW TO GET AROUND IZU OSHIMA ISLAND?
Izu Oshima is a relatively small island with well-maintained roads. It takes just 1 hour to circumnavigate the coastal road by car, and around 30 minutes to drive inland from the coastline to Mount Mihara.
The transportation methods on the island include rental cars, mopeds, e-bikes, taxis, and public buses.
A rental car is the most recommended and reasonably affordable option, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Izu Oshima Rent Car is a popular provider with pick-up locations at Motomachi Port and Okata Port.
Private taxis are available for up to 4 people at a rate of 50,000 Yen ($350 USD) for a one-day island tour. This option is best if you travel as a group and can split the cost.
While there’s a local bus, it’s infrequent and not the most reliable option. If you want to make the most of your trip, renting your own car, moped, or e-bike is the way to go.
WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT IZU OSHIMA?
Izu Oshima is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you’re looking for.
From January to March, the island is famous for its blooming camellia flowers, making it a popular winter destination, plus you’ll get to witness the iconic Tsubaki Festival.
If you’re into beach activities and watersports, summer is better, with water temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius.
HOW MANY DAYS IN OSHIMA ISLAND?
How long you spend on the island depends on how much you want to explore. A day trip from Tokyo to Oshima is enough time to visit a few key attractions and get a feel for the island.
However, if you really want to take your time and experience all the best things to do in Oshima Island, I recommend spending 2 to 3 days.
I personally stayed for 2 days and 1 night and it was enough to see the main tourist spots without rushing.
15 BEST THINGS TO DO IN OSHIMA ISLAND JAPAN
Now that we’ve covered general information about the island and all the logistics, let’s get to the fun stuff – the best things to do on Oshima Island and must-visit attractions.
MT. GAIRIN OBSERVATION DECK
The Mt. Gairin Observation Deck is where you should kick off your Izu Oshima Island adventure. This spot is like your front-row seat to a gorgeous landscape, and you’ll have an epic view of Mount Mihara.
On a clear day, you can even catch a glimpse of the Izu Peninsula off in the distance. The breeze up there is refreshing, and it’s the perfect place to take a deep breath and just soak in the scenery.
If you’re into photography, your camera is going to love this spot. It’s also a great way to start your day, as the trailhead to Mount Mihara Crater Rim is right here.
HIKE TO MOUNT MIHARA CRATER RIM
For adventure seekers, the hike to Mount Mihara’s Crater Rim is a must-do. Starting at the Mt. Gairin Observation Deck, this trail takes you through some of Oshima’s most interesting landscapes.
The hike itself is about 1.5 hours to the rim and 1 hour back, and it’s not too difficult, just enough to get your heart pumping. Allow a bit more time if you wish to circle the caldera.
Along the way, you’ll pass by Pahoehoe lava flows, which makes it feel like you’ve landed on another planet. Once you reach the crater rim, you’ll be standing on the edge of an active volcano, and the views are simply amazing.
As mentioned above, the walk back is about an hour, and by the time you finish, you’ll feel like you’ve really accomplished something.
Pack some water and snacks, wear some good hiking boots or shoes, and enjoy the hike. The trail is well-maintained (as expected in Japan) and you’ll love every minute of the adventure.
VISIT URA-SABAKU BLACK DESERT
Ura-Sabaku Black Desert is a place that makes you feel like you’ve just discovered a new world, and is not to be missed when visiting the island.
Park your vehicle in the parking area where the trailhead is located, and from here it’s an easy 10 to 15-minute walk to the viewpoint.
Ura-Sabaku is a vast expanse of black sand with the iconic Mount Mihara in the background, creating a scene that’s straight out of a movie.
The contrast between the black sand, green foliage, and blue sky is an incredible sight and I highly recommend you take your camera with you.
You won’t find many places like this, so take your time to explore and just enjoy the surreal landscape. It’s quiet, peaceful, and a little eerie in the best way possible.
BAUMKUCHEN GEOLOGICAL FORMATION
The Baumkuchen Geological Formation is Oshima’s natural version of a layered cake, and it’s as cool as it sounds.
Named after the German dessert because of its layered appearance, this formation is your chance to get a glimpse into the island’s volcanic history.
It’s a quiet place, away from the busier parts of the island, so you can take your time and really enjoy the view.
The mix of colors and textures here makes it a great place for snapping some photos, and that’s a must for photography enthusiasts.
SENZU NO KIRIDOSHI STAIRWAY
Senzu no Kiridoshi Stairway is a hidden gem on Izu Oshima that feels like a step back in time.
The stone stairway provides a peaceful and almost mystical vibe as you walk up or down.
It’s not a long walk, and it’ll only take you a few minutes to reach the top, but the setting is so beautiful that you simply can’t miss it on your tour around the island.
GO SNORKELING OR SCUBA DIVING
If you’re into snorkeling or scuba diving, Oshima Island Japan is the perfect place to enjoy this underwater activity.
The clear, warm waters are perfect for getting up close to marine life. You can see colorful fish and coral formations, and I’m confident it will make your trip even more unique.
Uminowa is the only diving shop on the island with 40 years of experience welcoming all visitors. All the rental gear is provided as well as a fun and professional instructor.
BUGGY TOUR ON OSHIMA ISLAND
An ATV buggy tour is an exciting way to see Oshima Island. These tours take you through both desert and coastal areas, giving you a unique perspective of the island.
You’ll drive through some of the most scenic spots, with the wind in your hair and the open road ahead.
As you can imagine, the tours are guided, so you don’t have to worry about getting lost. You can book the tour with BTB Oshima for 12,000 Yen ($83 USD) for 90 minutes.
Also, if it’s your first time riding an ATV, you’ll receive training before leaving, which is nice.
It’s worth noting that you need an international driving license if you want to join the tour, so keep that in mind.
CHECK OUT SANO-HAMA BEACH
Sano-Hama Beach is a must-visit spot on Izu Oshima, especially if you love black sand beaches. This beach is located near the Baumkuchen Geological Formation, so you can easily visit both in one trip.
Whether you want to take a dip in the water, stroll along the shore, or just enjoy the view, Sano-Hama Beach is an amazing spot to visit.
If you plan to stay on the island for the night, I highly recommend coming here for the sunset – you won’t regret it!
TAKE A PHOTO OF BUDDY’S BELL
Buddy’s Bell is a special spot on Izu Oshima Island, and it’s the kind of place that makes you pause for a moment.
This memorial is a quiet tribute, and while it might not be the biggest attraction, it definitely has a certain charm. The bell is situated in a peaceful setting, making it perfect for a thoughtful visit.
People often come here to take photos, not just because of the bell itself but also because of the relaxing atmosphere and the sea views.
It’s not far from Okata Port, so you can easily stop here while driving around the coastal road.
WATCH THE SUNSET AT MOTOMACHI PORT PIER
Watching the sunset at Motomachi Port Pier is one of those experiences that stays with you long after leaving the island.
As the day winds down, the pier offers stunning views of the sun dipping below the horizon, with the mainland of Japan in the distance.
It’s a peaceful way to end the day, and the cool breeze off the water adds to the relaxing vibe.
DISCOVER FUDESHIMA ROCK ISLAND
Fudeshima Rock Island is a hidden treasure that’s worth seeking out, and the best way to describe it is mysterious.
This small, rocky island is located just off the coast and the shape resembles the tip of a paintbrush, with a height of 30 meters.
There aren’t many activities to do here, but it’s a fantastic place to stop and marvel at the view.
WANDER AROUND HABU PORT
Habu Port is a charming fishing village in the south of the island. The port is surrounded by traditional Japanese buildings, small shops, and cozy cafes, making it the perfect place to slow down and soak in the Japanese culture.
You’ll get to see fishermen going about their daily routines and the vibe here is laid-back and welcoming, giving you a true sense of island life.
We actually spent one night in Habu Port in a traditional Japanese apartment (more on that below).
Oh, and don’t forget to visit the Habu Port Scenic Viewpoint for some gorgeous views over the pier and the boats!
OSHIMA ZOO PARK
Oshima Zoo Park is not just another zoo, here you’ll find so many unique animal species.
Unlike larger zoos, this small park is home to animals you wouldn’t normally see in Japan, like Giant African tortoises, Barbary sheep, and even a camel enjoying an ocean view.
The best part? It’s free to enter, making it a great option for a casual day out. It’s a perfect spot for families and animal lovers.

CAMELLIA FLOWER FESTIVAL (TSUBAKI FESTIVAL)

With around three million camellia shrubs blooming across the island, you’re in for a treat!
The festival takes place from late January to late March each year, and it’s well worth it if you happen to visit in these months.
During the festival, you can take a walk among the camellia-lined paths, enjoying the setting, and the fragrance that fills the air.
The festival is a great way to connect with nature, and the main venue is Tsubaki Plaza in Oshima Park, about a 10 to 15-minute drive from Okata Port.
HAJIKAMA SHRINE & FOREST WALK
This list wouldn’t be complete without the Hajikama Shrine and forest walk.
The shrine is located on the northeastern part of Izu Oshima, not far from the zoo, and you’ll immediately notice the peaceful atmosphere as soon as you arrive.
First things first, you can climb the forest walk, and it only takes a few minutes from the main torii gate to the shrine.
And once you’re there, you’ll be treated to a gorgeous religious location that’s as authentic and Japanese as it gets.
The ground is covered in soft moss, adding to the unique, almost otherworldly feel of the place. Despite being a lesser-known spot, the cool, refreshing air, and the quiet surroundings make it a perfect place for a reflective moment or a peaceful walk.

IS OSHIMA ISLAND EXPENSIVE?
Oshima Island isn’t overly expensive, but costs can vary depending on your style of travel.
Accommodation ranges from budget-friendly options to pricier hotels. Dining out can be affordable if you stick to local restaurants, but higher-end restaurants will naturally cost more.
Also, there are many free things to do in Oshima Island, but there are guided tours and rentals, like the buggy tour and snorkeling so you’ll have to consider that in your overall expenses.
WHAT ARE THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN OSHIMA?
There are quite a few restaurants dotted around the island and in the main town. Below is a list of some great restaurants we tried and also a few other recommended options.
SUSHIKOU
Sushikou is a lively small-town sushi spot where the staff makes you feel right at home, even if you don’t speak Japanese.
The sushi, especially the Bekko and Tuna sashimi, is incredibly fresh and served quickly. They even offer hot tea to all diners, adding a warm touch to your meal. You’re guaranteed a great meal here!
AMAYADORI YAKITORI RESTAURANT
Amayadori Yakitori Restaurant is a cozy spot where you can enjoy perfectly grilled yakitori, Nankotsu skewers, fried chicken, and even horse sashimi.
Each dish is nicely prepared with outstanding flavors. The warm, inviting atmosphere makes it a great place to relax after a long day of adventures, and the food is served promptly even when the place is packed.
KITCHEN LIVE
Kitchen Live is a stylish and quiet restaurant offering a blend of Western and Japanese dishes.
The portions are generous, but the food is so delicious you’ll likely finish every bite. They serve everything from spaghetti to Japanese curry and Omurice, all in a welcoming atmosphere with excellent customer service.
It’s the perfect spot if you’re in the mood for a hearty meal in a relaxed setting.
KUI TANTANMEN
kUi Tantanmen is a chic restaurant known for its healthy Dandan noodles, made with fresh ingredients. The space is stylish, with high ceilings and a modern vibe – a nice contrast to the natural setting on Oshima.
The staff are friendly, and the Dandan noodles, especially the soy milk version, are deliciously creamy and satisfying.
kUi Tantanmen is worth a visit if you stay for more than one day on the island.
