HAKUBA TRAVEL TIPS
Below are some useful travel tips for your visit to Hakuba, Japan.
HOW TO GET TO HAKUBA
Narita International Airport is the closest International Airport to Hakuba, which is located on the outskirts of Tokyo City, 270 km east of Hakuba Valley.
There are a few options to get to Hakuba from Narita Airport which I have listed below:
TRAIN + BUS
This trip includes taking a train from Narita to Tokyo Station (or Ueno Station), then a bullet train (Shinkansen) to Nagano Station, and then a bus to Hakuba Bus Terminal. This is the fastest route.
Your best option before arriving in Japan is to purchase a Japan Rail Pass which is much cheaper than buying a ticket on the spot.

From the Tokyo International Airport, the total trip takes about 3.5 to 4 hours depending upon connection timing.
The other advantage of taking the trains is that it’s a great insight into a part of the Japanese culture. This trip costs approximately $80.
Travel Japan with the JR Pass!
Get a 7-day, 14-day, or 21-day JR Pass for your trip to Japan and enjoy unlimited travel on trains and buses!
The JR Pass is valid on the Shinkansen (bullet train), Limited Express, Local Trains, Monorail, and JR Buses.
DIRECT TRANSFER FROM TOKYO NARITA AIRPORT
This involves getting a private transfer, a shuttle bus, or a shared taxi transfer directly from Tokyo Narita Airport to Hakuba, which tends to cost a little more than the train/bus combo.
This trip takes longer, about 5 to 6 hours, but it provides the advantage of not having to lug your bags around the train stations, on and off trains and buses, or grapple with train fares and timetables.
Direct transfers can generally be organized in advance via the staff at your selected accommodation in Hakuba.
HOW TO GET AROUND HAKUBA
There are 9 ski resorts in Hakuba Valley and each mountain is accessible on foot (depending on the location of your accommodation), by shuttle bus, by taxi, or with a rental car.
SHUTTLE BUS
Free shuttle buses operate every 30 minutes between all of the Hakuba Ski Resorts but make sure to be on time, as the Japanese are very punctual and will stick to an efficient ‘on the dot’ schedule.
Shuttle bus timetables can be found at your accommodation or at guest services in each resort.
TAXI
Taxis are available 7 days a week throughout Hakuba in the winter season and can be hailed down, or pre-booked.
Two taxi companies are operating in Hakuba which are Alps Taxi and Alpico Taxi.
- To pre-book a taxi with Alps Taxi call +81 261-72-2221
- To pre-book a taxi with Alpico Taxi call +81 261-72-2236
RENTAL CAR
Another great option that provides more flexibility is to rent a car when you arrive in Hakuba and have the freedom to travel around on your own schedule.
Discover Cars is a fantastic website for searching and booking cheap and reliable car rentals in Hakuba.

It’s essentially a bathing house where there are indoor and outdoor springs to soak in. Traditionally, the baths are segregated between males and females and you have to enter the springs completely nude.
To some, this sounds out of their comfort zone but you will get used to it after you visit once or twice. A perfect way to relax and soothe your muscles after a big day on the mountain.

From Hakuba, there are day tours available to visit the wild Snow Monkeys and Zenkoji Temple.
