Located in the heart of Indonesia, Kelor Island (Pulau Kelor) is a stunning uninhabited island that makes for an awesome adventure when visiting Labuan Bajo in Flores.
As there is no accommodation on the island, you can’t stay here overnight, but there are plenty of activities to do when stopping in for the day.
Simply enjoy the peaceful vibes Kelor Island has to offer, chill at the beach, or if you’re fancying some more fun-fuelled activities, swimming and snorkeling are great options, too.
If you’re up for an adventure, hike the small mountain in the middle of Pulau Kelor which offers a panoramic view of the island and its surroundings.
I have put together this complete guide to visiting the island including how to get here, how much it costs, and what to expect when you arrive!
WHERE IS KELOR ISLAND?
Pulau Kelor belongs to Komodo National Park and is situated in Flores, the center of the Indonesian archipelago.
This tiny island is located about 10 km away from Labuan Bajo, the main tourist town in Flores, which makes it really easy to access by boat.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The best time to visit is between the months of April and June and from September to November.
Between the months of April and November, the weather is pleasant with minimal rainfall and the outside temperature is warm in general.

However, the months of July and August are the hottest and most crowded months so if you want a peaceful experience without lots of tourists, try to avoid these months.
HOW TO GET HERE
Being an island, the only way to get here is by boat from Labuan Bajo.
First, you need to get to the main town of Labuan Bajo in Flores. There are multiple flights from all the bigger airports around Indonesia including Bali, Lombok, Jakarta, Surabaya, Makassar, and Kupang airports.

Once you’ve touched down safely in Labuan Bajo, you’re going to need a boat to get out to the islands.
The journey time from Labuan Bajo to Kelor Island depends on if it’s a speedboat or a normal boat, but you can expect the trip to take approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour.
DAY TRIP FROM LABUAN BAJO
If your time is limited, you can simply book a day trip from Labuan Bajo.
Depending on your preferences and budget, you can opt for a group tour or a private boat tour.
There is one tour that I can highly recommend that covers all the highlights on a full-day trip from Labuan Bajo.
The Komodo Full-Day Boat Tour is the most top-rated tour with great reviews and hundreds of bookings.
This tour covers the top locations in Komodo National Park such as the famous Padar Island, Pink Beach Komodo, seeing the famous Komodo dragons, and swimming at Kelor.
It also includes a hassle-free pick-up and drop-off from your hotel in Labuan Bajo, return boat transfers, and an English-speaking guide.

MULTI-DAY SAILING TRIP
Another option to see Kelor Island Labuan Bajo and the surrounding sights in Komodo National Park is a multi-day sailing adventure.
I personally booked my tour with Travass Life which offers amazing tours around Komodo Island, and I can’t recommend them enough!
Their most popular 3-day tour includes visits to Komodo Island, Pulau Kelor, Rinca Island, Kalong Island, Padar Island, Pink Beach, Taka Makassar, Manta Point, Sebayur Island, Kanawa Island, and Labuan Bajo.
The tour also includes pick-up and drop-offs in Labuan Bajo, a private or shared room with a bathroom onboard the boat, all meals and drinking water, snorkeling equipment, towels, and a tour guide.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON PULAU KELOR
Although being a small island there are plenty of fun things to do during your visit.
First of all, you can jump off the jetty into the vibrant turquoise waters below, but if you are not game enough to jump, you can just stick to the swimming part, which I promise is just as good.
With translucid waters, you can see everything below you while swimming, making it the perfect location to do some snorkeling as well.
Due to the water’s transparency, you will be able to spot amazing sea life which is characteristic of the island such as turtles, rays, baby sharks, shrimps, clownfish, and more.
Have you got travel insurance for Flores? We all know accidents can happen and having World Nomads Insurance will save you thousands of dollars if something goes wrong.
Besides all the water activities, you can also opt to go on a short 10-minute hike to the viewpoint at the top of the hill. The hike, although of short distance, is a bit of a challenge, but the view from the top is totally worth it.
If you are planning on hiking, make sure to use appropriate footwear as the path can be slippery, especially on the way back down.
When you reach the top you’ll be greeted with expansive views overlooking Pulau Kelor and the surrounding islands in Komodo National Park.
It’s the perfect spot to take some amazing photos and simply enjoy the unique landscape.
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
There are no restaurants or bars on the island, but you will find small beach vendors selling fresh coconuts, drinking water, and other snacks.
The beach vendors also have an array of souvenirs if you’d like to purchase something for a keepsake to remember your time spent on this tropical island.
For such a small island, there really is so much to do! Whether it’s chilling at the beach catching some Vitamin D or going on the hike to see the mesmerizing view from the top – there is something here for everyone!
