Canon EOS R5 Full Frame Mirrorless Camera: Complete Review

//

An extensive review of the Canon EOS R5 Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera.

This is the exact camera I’ve been using for the past month throughout my travels in Northern Territory and Western Australia and I’ve absolutely loved every second of using it.

In this complete review, I’ve included the specifications of the Canon EOS R5, the handling of the camera, a breakdown of both film and video, as well as a bit about the lenses I used, and a conclusion about the camera itself.

I’ve tried to keep this post short and sweet, but also made sure to include all the vital information that you’re longing to know!

The EOS R5 is Canon’s newest camera on the market, boasting a full-frame mirrorless sensor that is built to fulfill everyone’s needs, whatever you shoot and however you shoot it.

The EOS R5 will let you release your creativity in ways you have never been able to before. A 45-megapixel camera, shooting up to 20 frames per second, this camera really packs a punch.

If it’s video that tickles your fancy, then this camera films cinematic 12 bit 8K RAW video, all whilst using the entire width of the camera’s sensors. So needless to say, this is one heck of a camera!

The Specifications

  • The EOS R5 has a 45 MP resolution, capable of producing the most intricate detail in all of your shots
  • It shoots at 20 frames per second with up to an 8-stop image stabilizer. So If you’re shooting moving objects, you don’t need to worry about the focus… this camera’s got you sorted
  • It comes fully equipped with Full Frame internal 8K RAW video and a pull-out screen
  • ISO 100- 51,200
  • Built-in Wifi and Bluetooth
  • 5940 Auto Focus positions
  • CF Express and SD Card slots for maximum speed and maximum compatibility

Quite put, the specs on the Canon EOS R5 are insane.

Build & Handling

In the hand, the EOS R5 is slightly thicker and heavier than the other EOS bodies. This is due to the sheer amount Canon has packed into this quite small camera and the capabilities it allows.

The build is significantly more sturdy and durable than other cameras on the market and has a total body weight of 738g (including the memory card and battery).

The body consists of the main dial, 2 quick control dials, the AF main controllers, and the top panel display. It has the main pull-out display screen which is touch screen enabled, as well as a digital viewfinder.

Performance – Stills

Let’s move on to the photographic performance of this camera. With a 45 MP resolution, shooting at 20 frames per second, you know you’re in for a good ride with the Canon EOS R5. Shooting stills, this camera is undeniably at the top of its game.

Yes, something like the Canon 5D Mark III is going to outperform the EOS R5 in both performance and dynamic range, but the EOS R5 certainly brings its own unique qualities to the table.

With game-changing technology, shooting in RAW, and heightening AF features, this camera is great for all levels of photographers.

One of the new features on the Canon EOS R5 is the subject AF. This means you can set this to AF-Animal, point the camera at an animal and this will perfectly focus.

Blurring the background nicely and providing you with some impeccable wildlife shots. Wildlife photographers will be stoked with this insane technology.

The image quality overall is incredible, allowing great diversity of shooting with manual and autofocus.

The settings on this camera go above and beyond and give such freedom when you’re out in the field shooting.

Whether you’re an amateur or expert, the Canon EOS R5 is a great addition to your kit.

Performance – Video

Let’s just address the elephant in the room and talk about what everyone else is talking about. If you shoot above 4K 30P video, which is the standard for this camera, then you will be subject to overheating.

Therefore, such limits will prevent you from the sort of videos you can capture with this camera.

In layman’s terms, long-form video is probably out of the question.

However, if you can escape the limitations of the video, then you open yourself up to some incredible quality footage. If you shoot in the standard 4K 30P, then you won’t be subject to overheating.

Film for as long as you like (up to the standard 30-minute limit) and film whatever you like.

With a perfect AF feature, as well as the essential touchscreen display, you’re in for a real treat with the Canon EOS R5.

With rich, detailed footage, and the ability to have an external mic for even greater sound quality, this camera is the perfect option to lift your vlogging game to the next level.

Lenses I Used

Now it’s the age-old tale of ‘it’s not what camera you have, it’s what lens you use’ and to some extent, I do agree with this. You could have a camera body that is 5 years old with a cracking lens on it and you’ll still get a great quality image.

In this instance, I used a Canon EOS R5 body with a couple of really good lenses and boom, that’s a recipe for photography success if ever I’ve seen one.

Lenses I used:

  • RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS
  • RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS
  • RF 15-35mm F2.8 L IS
